7 Product Photography Tips for Cleaner Background Removal

·6 min read·ISOLATE Team

AI background removal is fast, but you'll get sharper edges and fewer touch-ups if the original photo is set up well. These seven tips take a few minutes and make a visible difference.

1. Separate the product from the background

Put some distance between your item and whatever is behind it. The more the subject stands out, the more confidently the model finds its edges.

2. Use soft, even lighting

Diffused light from two sides reduces harsh shadows. Shadows that blend into the background are the most common cause of rough cut-outs.

3. Avoid backgrounds that match the product

A white mug on a white table is hard for any tool to separate. Choose a background color that contrasts with your item.

4. Shoot in focus and at high resolution

  • Tap to focus on the product before you shoot.
  • Use the highest resolution your camera allows.
  • Steady the phone or use a small tripod to avoid blur.

5. Mind reflective and transparent items

Glass, jewelry, and glossy packaging can confuse edge detection. Reduce glare with diffused light and a matte surface underneath.

6. Keep the whole product in frame

Leave a little margin around the item. Products cropped at the edge of the frame lose those edges in the cut-out.

7. Standardize once, repeat everywhere

Once you have a setup that works, use it for your whole catalog. Consistent lighting and framing mean consistent cut-outs — and a storefront that looks like a real brand.

Run your finished shots through ISOLATE, drop them onto a clean white background, and your listings are ready for Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, or eBay.
